Attention All Singles | Finding Your Person Is Mostly Luck | Episode 58

Meeting your person is mostly about luck — seriously, that’s the main point I want you to hear right away. I’m Wioleta, and I’ll happily argue that no amount of therapy, profile-refreshing, or confidence-boosting will guarantee you bumping into the perfect human at the perfect time. That said, I’m not saying stop trying: going to singles events, redownloading (or deleting) dating apps, getting off the couch, and actually talking to people increases your chances — but it doesn’t control the outcome. So when a date tanks, don’t immediately assume you’re broken; ask what you learned, what you enjoyed, and where else you might meet people who vibe with you. I find that thought kind of freeing — it takes the shame off being single and replaces it with the simple truth that a lot of this is just random alignment. Do the work to be your best self so your life improves now, and take more chances so your luck has more opportunities to find you; if luck hasn’t shown up yet, hey — we’re probably right on time.

I keep it blunt and oddly comforting: finding your person is mostly about luck. I say this as your host, Wioleta — not to be a downer, but to take some of the weight off our shoulders. We unpack how countless tiny variables have to conspire for two people to meet, be single at the same time, notice each other, want to pursue something, not ghost, and actually end up compatible. That’s a lot of moving parts. I admit I’m all for self-improvement — therapy, emotional availability, confidence, trying the apps, showing up to singles events — because they make life better and they nudge the odds in our favor. But optimizing yourself isn’t a guarantee; sometimes it’s simply random alignment, plain and simple. Call it fate, luck, or a cosmic weirdness — I toy with the idea that some of this feels almost predestined — yet I also give practical encouragement. Saying “yes” more, getting off the couch, talking to people, and treating bad dates as data instead of personal failures both increases your chances and helps you learn about yourself. The takeaway? Don’t let coupled people convince you that staying single means you’re broken. We can increase the odds without needing to control the outcome, and that relief? It’s my little glow-off for the week.

Takeaways:

  • I remind you (and myself) that meeting our person often comes down to plain luck, not just self-optimization.
  • We can do therapy, download apps, go to singles events, and still not meet them — timing and randomness matter a lot.
  • I like to think some things feel predestined, but taking chances, saying yes, and getting off the couch increases possibilities.
  • Instead of beating ourselves up after a bad date, we should ask what we learned and where else we might meet people.
  • We can't control the outcome, only increase our odds — so let's expand experiences, talk to more people, and enjoy the ride.
  • My little glow-up: a lot of life is lucky; even if your luck's been late, we're right on time, seriously.

What if finding your person is all about just luck?

Hi, welcome to or welcome back to All About Being Single.

I'm your host, Wioleta.

Happy Tuesday.

So this one's going to be a very short one, but let me just say something that I think single people need to hear more or at least be reminded about more.

Meeting someone most of the time is just about luck.

That's it.

Luck.

I think sometimes we put way too much pressure on ourselves.

Or I think actually a lot of other people put too much pressure on us to figure out what we're doing wrong when we're single.

Because faith, let's face it, like, you can work on yourself.

You can go to therapy, you can be the emotionally available one, you can download the apps, you can redownload the apps, you can get rid of the apps, you can go to singles events, you can put yourself out there, you can become the most confident, secure, just self aware version of yourself and you still might not meet your person.

And I don't say this to like upset you or to scare you.

I say this because, you know, there's a lot of things we cannot control in our lives and we can't control who walks into our life.

Like, think about how many random things have to line up for you to meet someone you're actually compatible with.

For you to meet, like quote unquote, your person, you have to be in the same place at roughly the same time.

Well, at the exact same time.

You both have to be single, you both have to be interested.

And obviously I know you technically don't have to be single because we know there's a lot of cheaters out there that exist.

Okay, anyhow, now I'm just digressing.

No need for that.

You both have to actually notice each other.

You have to have a conversation or at least give each other a phone number in some kind of way.

You have to want to see each other again and then you have to start dating and then nobody can ghost each other.

And then you have to actually be compatible in all the right ways.

You have to like similar things, you have to have, you know, I have to value the same things, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah.

Like there's a lot of variables and sometimes we forget that a lot of times it's not even what we're doing or what we're not doing, it's just luck.

A lot of people, especially the coupled up ones, so, you know, this is my no like to stand down.

They act like finding a partner is this equation where if you just like optimize yourself enough, you'll get the desired result.

And you know me, I'm all about improving yourself.

I'm all about being the best that you can be.

Because it does increase your chances of meeting a better kind of a person.

And I think it just improves you.

It improves your life, your quality of life.

But at the end of the day, meeting another person who also checks off all your boxes, who also is the right kind of person for you, that's fucking luck.

It's just luck.

And again, I don't fully mean that in, like, a hopeless way, because sometimes I know we can get down on ourselves and be like, well, why?

Why don't I have good luck?

And I've been there.

I do it all the time.

But, like, it also can be freeing, you know, if you haven't met someone yet, it doesn't mean that there's something wrong with you.

And a hill I'll die on, well, maybe won't die on.

This is a hill I'll lay on.

For now, I'm starting to just believe that it's all like almost predetermined, predestined.

But then the more chances that you take in life and the more you do to become a version of you, the more that you like and love, the faster you might actually meet them or the more chances, possibility that you give yourself to meet that person.

Just, again, just a personal thought.

Again, not sure that if I'll die in this hill just yet, but I really, I'm getting to that point.

And yeah, so, like, you can increase your chances of, like, meeting more people, whether it be a partner or just friends, you know, definitely meeting more single people to at least hang out with while you're still single, you know, so go to places, say, yes, try new things, Just talk to people.

Talk to, you know, get to know people in general.

Get off the couch.

But again, increasing your chances isn't the same thing as controlling the outcome.

So I think that's the important distinction for us single people.

You know, don't think that, like, every bad date should be a what did I do wrong?

Think about, okay, what experience did I get from this?

What am I learning about myself?

You know, what, where else can I meet more people?

Basically, where else can I increase my chances of getting to know others?

And what else can I do to just improve myself so that my quality of life is better?

Because, yes, we can put ourselves out there, and it does increase our chances of just getting to know more people.

And just in that sense also getting to know ourselves.

Better because the more we learn about different kinds of people, the more we see traits and skills ourselves that maybe we weren't even like seen before.

So I think that just expands our world view in general, which helps us to, I think, like more people, which also makes us more likable.

But anyhow, your glow off for this week is just remind yourself that a lot of things that happen in life seem to just be about luck.

That's all.

Just remind yourself of it.

Or for the first time, realize that a lot of what happens in our lives and around us and to us is lucky.

If you enjoyed this episode, please take a moment and just share it with a friend who you think might enjoy it as well.

As always, even if we're late.

So even if our luck has maybe been bad luck, or even if our luck hasn't gotten us to where we want to be at, we're right on time.

Thanks so much for listening.

Hope you have a good rest of your day whenever you're listening to this and I'll talk to you next Tuesday.

Myself.

Make a life.
